CLOTH STRENGTH

  • 1 Cloth Strength

The " breaking strain " or strength of both cloth and yarn is often of great importance. Nearly all government contracts contain a breaking strain clause. Numerous machines are obtainable to accurately determine the resistance to breaking of fabric or yam (see Yarn Strength)

  • 2 Balanced Cloth

A cloth that contains an equal number of ends and picks per inch of equal counts, such as aeroplane fabrics, where the greatest strength is a necessity.

Dictionary of the English textile terms > Balanced Cloth

  • 3 Extracted Cloth

A fabric produced by using a cotton thread with a wool thread and after weaving, the cotton is "extracted" or carbonised. The fabric is also known as " Mohlaine," " Permo " and " Resilda." The cloth is a type of lustrous worsted dress fabric in which a very soft twist warp is necessary in order to obtain the peculiar crepe effect desired. The wool warp, owing to the low twist, is too weak for weaving so the yam is twisted with a cotton thread which gives the requisite strength. The woven fabric is passed through a sulphuric acid solution which removes the cotton, leaving the wool yarns intact in the subsequent drying process (see Permo)

  • 4 Pulped Cloth

Calico, having a coating of paper, while in a state of pulp, run upon its upper surface by a paper machine, which causes them to adhere firmly together. It is used for purposes which require more strength than can be obtained in paper, especially the manufacture of emery and glass cloths.

  • 5 Shell Cloth

Cream coloured serge made for the British Army during the Great War of pure worsted in 2 & 2 twill weave, with 60 ends per inch of 2/36's and 70 picks per inch of 20's weft, and having a minimum tensile strength of 154-lb. warp way and 144-lb. weft way. This was used as a part of shells.

  • 6 Silk Bolting Cloth

A Swiss fabric used by flour millers. It is used to sift any ground material. It is made in pieces or in covers to fit any machine or appliance. Only the best Italian silk yarn is used and the fabric is carefully woven on hand looms and the texture is most uniform. It is elastic and of exceptional strength. The weavers do the work in their own homes. Standard width is 40-in., but it is also made 24-in., 28-in., and 34-in. wide. Made in numerous qualities and all are plain weave. • 11 Duck

A heavy cotton cloth used for purposes where great strength is required, such as for sails, boot linings, tent cloths, etc. The original duck was a linen cloth, made from double warp and weft of coarse counts, but nearly all ducks are now made from cotton yarns. Usually woven with double ends and double picks. A light duck is made. This is bleached and used for men's suitings in tropical countries. Ducks are usually named by the weight in ounces per yard - thus a 10-oz. duck cloth weighs 10-oz. per yard. For sailcloths the weave is plain and single-ends, viz., 24-in., 50 ends and 50 picks per inch, 3/30's T., 2/20's W. American makers number the sailcloth duck as follows: - Standard 22-in. No. 1 weighs 18-oz. per running yard. No. 2 weighs 17-oz. per running yard. No. 3 weighs 16-oz. per running yard. For cloths heavier than 18-oz. a cipher is added for each ounce increase, thus: 19-oz. = No. 1/0; 20-oz. = no. 2/0; 25-oz. = no. 7/0, and so on up to 36-02. per running yard of 22-in. cloth is No. 18/0. Any variation in width will weigh in direct proportion.

  • 12 Crimp Fabrics

The term includes such types as the "blister" and the "crepon." These fabrics are used for the making of dress goods, and can be produced in five different ways, namely: (a) by making suitable combinations of slack and tight weaves; (b) unequal warp tension in weaving, the crimp forming warp threads being allowed to weave very slack; (c) by combining two materials having a marked dissimilarity of shrinkage power during wet finishing, i.e., botany wool and mohair; (d) by modifying the weave structure in such a manner as to drop some picks from the main fabric and allow them to float on the back, the effectiveness of this method is enhanced by using a hard-twisted, single weft yarn to assist the contraction; (e) chemical means, such as is produced by printing the cloth in stripes with caustic soda of about 20 per cent strength, thickened with some substance such as starch. The cloth shrinks where printed and the unprinted parts in puckering gives the crimp effect. By dyeing the cloth two tones are obtained as a darker shade is shown where the caustic soda appears (see crepeing and crimps)

  • 13 Double Warps

A term used by home trade buyers for a plain cloth made from twofold warp and single weft, good quality yarns. The cloth is used for pillow cases, underwear, etc. Widths 341/2-in. to 36-in., 60 ends X 60 picks per inch, or 44 ends, one in a dent, and 72 picks; yarns 2/36's twist, 16's to 20's weft. The finished cloth is bleached and soft finished. All " double warps " are super qualities, giving strength and wear. The term does not mean two warps are used but simply a single warp of two-fold yarn.
